O Foolish Campians (Heb. 9:22)

I know who has bewitched you.

Let us take Bible in hand and review the verse Harold Camping bases his heretical "pre-creation atonement" teaching upon.

Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

The Greek word that is translated as "remission" in Hebrews 9:22 is "aphesis" (Strong's #859). The word "remission" is used 10 times in the King James New Testatment and in every case except one, the word "aphesis" is used.

Here is the one exception:

Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Ro 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Romans 3:25's "remission" is translated from the Greek word "paresis" (Strong's #3929). This word "paresis", used only one time in the King James version, is a brilliant jewel that shines a blinding light of condemnation on Harold Camping's very foolish teaching.

The difference between these words is simple. Perhaps it will prove to be even too simple for the Harold Camping Fan Club. The word "aphesis" means "freedom" or "pardon". It signifies the release from bondage and the removal of sins, as if they had never been committed.

However, the very different word "paresis", which is also translated as "remission" in Romans 3:25, signifies the overlooking of sins and the suspension or withholding of judgment.

  1. Aha! The suspension of judgment or the withholding of punishment. Very good! You are always digging just a little deeper into your Strong's. Fixedheart ~ I did as you suggested, boxed all HC periodicals and stuff and disposed of it. Hmmm, what can I fill that space with now? How bout I just box up all the volumes of PRC books, remove the bookcase & put my Keith Green NO COMPROMISE poster on the wall!! That's that for that. Turning 180 from OF, Echoes, Bible Class of the Air , Lord's Day Study & Searching the Scriptures has been a huge correction in my life. I can meditate on some easy non-complicated verses for awhile. I need that. To dismiss almost 2 decades of mostly false indoctrination won't be easy but your easy to understand bible studies will surely help. I have heard HC's & the churches false teachings, now I recognize the situation,& have fled the harlot. I'm a scattered True Believer & hallelujah I'm a survivor!

    Now a question ~ I have also been labled a hypercalvinist when I was in the corporate church (removed myself in the mid '90's). As you know the main tenet in reformed theology is the doctrine TULIP. I didn't see anywhere in your posts but I'm sure your privy to HC's reversal of his position on total depravity. His idea sounded good backed up by a couple of scriptures that I can remember... God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, Jesus wept over Jerusalem, the benevolent rains on everyone. I'm not trying to debate anything. Just seeking the truth, "wanting to see if it is so". If you will keep on comparing scripture with scripture with your easy non confusing style, I'll let you be my teacher anyday. Thanks, Doug

  2. Re: "You are always digging just a little deeper into your Strong's."

    Funny you said this because I bought a good concordance for my workplace away from home and can't believe how interesting the notes are.

    It's hard to find posts on this blog due to my annoying use of cutesy titles, but I don't think I have griped much about Mr. C's partial depravity. I also haven't taken aim at his unsaved Solomon teaching very much. I think the reason is that the false doctrines started to come too fast and furiously to keep up and I have to pick my battles. I also haven't gotten this blog up to date on several other teachings that bother me, such as the "Sunday Sabbath", but maybe I can catch up when I retire.

    I was just reading J.B. Phillips' version of Romans 3:25, etc.:

    "For there is no distinction to be made anywhere: everyone has sinned, everyone falls short of the beauty of God's plan. A man who has faith is now freely acquitted in the eyes of God by his generous dealing in the redemptive act of Christ Jesus. God has appointed him as the means of propitiation, a propitiation accomplished by the shedding of his blood, to be received and made effective in ourselves by faith. God has done this to demonstrate his righteousness both by the wiping out of the sins of the past (the time when he withheld his hand), and by showing in the present time that he is a just God and that he justifies every man who has faith in in Jesus."

    Except for the use of the word "demonstrate", I think it is a nice paraphrase.

    Rather than a teacher, I prefer to be a travelling companion on the road to Emmaus.

    Lu 24:13 ¶ And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
    14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

  3. Of course, it's not that Mr. Phillips used "demonstrate" the wrong way. He had no way of knowing what that word would mean to so many people today.
